Born on the beautiful island of St. Kitts in the Caribbean, the now British singer/songwriter Joan Armatrading, was her country's first Black woman to make a commercial break into her chosen music genre. Her haunting melody that is, Love and Affection, was made complete from her take on folk music, blended with bits of soul and reggae. She has had a outstandingly long and consistent career. Emigrating from St. Kitts, to England, in 1958, Joan Armatrading met lyricist, Pam Nestor in a touring production of Hair, and the two began working in partnership on material later featured on Armatrading's 1972 debut album.
